If you are informed by a girl under 18 that an act of FGM has been carried out on her; or observe physical signs which appear to show that an act of FGM has been carried out on a girl under 18.  Regulated professionals must report it to the Police under the Mandatory Duty using the 101 non-emergency number.

FGM Information Sharing system

NHS Digital website which explains about the FGM-IS system: https://digital.nhs.uk/services/female-genital-mutilation-risk-indication-system-fgm-ris

It may appear basic, but it is also quite simple.  It doesn’t try to make an argument about whether or not the system works or the nuanced links between this and safeguarding, but it does say what it is!

There are 6 short animations which explain how the FGM-IS system might be used in a GP setting.  They are here

This video shows someone exactly what the system looks like, and exactly (click for click) how to add the FGM-IS indicator to a record. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NotDyqGo5Y&feature=youtu.be

Last year, this letter went  out telling the NHS that they need to start using the system.  It is here:https://digital.nhs.uk/binaries/content/assets/website-assets/services/fgm/nhs-england-call-to-action-for-phase-2-implementation.pdf

I will send an email intro to Tim Dalby who is the person leading the implementation at NHS Digital, and I’ll copy in James (who you met at my leaving do).  Tim is absolutely brilliant, but I’ve got to word it carefully as there is a bit of politics about NHS Digital being asked to do lots of extra stuff which perhaps NHSE should do (which is why I’m going to copy to Joey too)

Here is a video with a survivor talking about the FGM-IS system –
